Management

Timothy Whitten, President & Chief Executive Officer. Tim joined Transave from Pharmacyclics where he served most recently as Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations and Development since 2001. Prior to Pharmacyclics, he served as Vice President, Global Marketing, Oncology at BMS. During his 16 years in marketing, sales and strategic planning at BMS, Tim led the successful U.S. launch and marketing of Taxol® (paclitaxel) Injection, an oncology product that eventually reached $1 billion in annual sales. Later, as Vice President, Marketing, Oncology and Immunology, he was responsible for sales of over $1.3 billion from 23 products, directing marketing and sales efforts to key customers, including large physician group practices, group purchasing organizations and major hospital chains. He earned his master's degree in business administration from Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at University of Virginia and received his pharmacy degree from West Virginia University.

Renu Gupta, M.D., Executive Vice President Development & Chief Medical Officer. Renu joined Transave from Antigenics, Inc., where she was Senior Vice President of Development, advancing its immunotherapy and small molecule pipeline for Oncology and Infectious Diseases. Prior to that, she served at Novartis as Vice President and Head of U.S. Clinical Research and Development and Global Head of Cardiovascular, Metabolics, Endocrine and Gastroenterology Research. Renu also spent two years at Covance as Vice President and Head of Medical, Safety and Therapeutics, and almost 10 years at Bristol-Myers Squibb, where she was responsible for clinical research, business development and global development and marketing strategy. Renu received her bachelor and medical degrees from the University of Zambia and completed her medical and post-doctoral training at Albert Einstein Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania's Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Her work has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Infectious Diseases and she has been active in numerous relevant academic and professional societies such as the Infectious Disease Society of America and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Walter Perkins, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer. Walter joined Transave in 2002 and has over 20 years experience with liposomes and lipid-based drug delivery systems, and has over 55 publications and patent applications. He holds a Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from the University of Virginia where he studied the physical and electrical properties of liposomal membranes. His pharmaceutical expertise lies in liposome formulation design, characterization, and development. Prior to joining Transave, Walter spent 15 years with The Liposome Company (later a part of Elan Drug Delivery). At The Liposome Company, Walter was involved in the design of several lipid-based drug delivery systems, including an artificial lung surfactant formulation, and helped in the characterization, development and launch of the company's two commercial products Abelcet® and Myocet®. As a part of Elan's Drug Delivery Division, he played a lead role in the implementation of liposome technology in both inter-divisional projects and corporate partnerships.

Michio Soga, Chief Financial Officer. Mich Soga brings twenty years of international and domestic corporate finance experience to Transave. He has held various executive positions at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Credit Agricole Indosuez in New York, Tokyo and London. In addition to his considerable corporate finance experience, Mich has a strong operational background, having served as Chief Financial Officer with Confetti Network, an internet company in the UK and as Interim CFO with Metaphore Pharmaceuticals. Most recently, Mich was the Chief Financial Officer of Pharmacopeia, Inc. (NASDAQ: PCOP), a biopharmaceutical company developing small molecule therapeutics. Mich holds a Bachelors degree from Dartmouth College, and a Masters of Private and Public Management from the Yale School of Management.

Nicholas Gurreri, Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations and Business Development. Nick Gurreri brings twenty years of global and US commercial pharmaceutical and medical device experience to Transave. He has held various management positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMS), Pharmacia Corp. and Pfizer, Inc. In his most recent role as the head of Pfizer's Global Anti-infective Therapeutic Area, Nick was responsible for managing Zyvox® and Vfend®, which had combined annual sales of over $1 billion, commercializing pipeline products and working closely with R&D leadership to formulate discovery and licensing strategies. Earlier at Pharmacia and then at Pfizer, Nick was responsible for the development of the ophthalmology therapeutic area strategy and led the team that developed the first billion dollar ophthalmic brand, Xalatan®. Nick began his pharmaceutical career at BMS, where he held positions of increasing responsibility in the cardiovascular marketing area, ultimately leading BMS' largest US brands, Pravachol® and Capoten®. In his last role at BMS, Nick had global franchise responsibility for a portfolio of wound care products in the Convatec medical device division. Nick earned a Master of Business Administration from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Delaware.

Eric Dadey, Ph.D., Vice President Preclinical Development. Eric joined Transave in 2007 and brings more than 15 years of professional and academic experience in research and product development. Prior to joining Transave, Eric was Vice President Drug Delivery at QLT USA, Inc., where he was responsible for all formulation development, CMC and preclinical activities associated with the company's flagship drug delivery technology, ATRIGEL®. Earlier in his career, Eric was a member of the faculty in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he developed and patented novel liposome formulations for the treatment of HIV. He also served as a Group Leader at Nycomed-Salutar in Sunnyvale, CA and was Team Leader at ACCESS Pharmaceuticals in Dallas, TX. Eric earned his doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Kentucky where his graduate work focused on the synthesis of novel microparticles for use as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging.

Laura Edgerly-Pflug, Executive Director, Technical Operations. Laura joined Transave in 2006 and brings over 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with a specialty in the development and manufacture of liposomal delivery systems. Her broad experience includes securing multiple product approvals from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European Medicines Agency (EMEA) and the Medicines Control Agency (MCA). Prior to joining Transave Laura was employed by Ovation Pharmaceuticals, Biomira USA, and The Liposome Company. At Ovation she was responsible for the technology transfer efforts, commercial production and the distribution associated with two marketed Pharmaceutical products. While at Biomira USA and the Liposome Company, Laura's work included developing liposomal products and she held a key role as a member of the team that developed and commercialized Abelcet®, the first approved lipid based drug. Laura has a BS in Chemistry and has completed additional course work in Pharmaceutics at Rutgers College of Pharmacy.

Dee Grosso, Executive Director, Human Resources. Dee joined Transave in 2007 and has over twenty years of progressive experience in all areas of Human Resources (HR), with a particular emphasis on strategic business planning, staffing, employee relations, organizational development, compensation and benefits, performance management and leadership development. Dee most recently came from Solstice Neurosciences, a start-up biotechnology company where she helped build the company's overall infrastructure, as well as, built and led the HR function. Prior to Solstice she was a Senior Business Partner at Astra Zeneca as the Drug Development HR Director, a Vice President of HR at Advanta Mortgage & Financial Services, and a Senior Director at IMS Health, formerly owned by Dun Bradstreet, where she led the HR group for the Consulting, Healthcare, and Direct Marketing divisions. She completed an undergraduate degree in Business from Temple University, and her Master's degree in Organizational Development from the University of Pennsylvania.

Paul Meers, Ph.D., Sr. Principal Scientist. Paul joined Transave in 2004 with 25 years of experience working with liposomes and lipid-based drug delivery systems. He holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Cornell University where he studied the physical and chemical properties of lipid membrane-active molecules. His postdoctoral training at the University of California in San Francisco was in the area of biochemistry and physics of membrane fusion with Dr. Demetrios Papahadjopoulos, one of the pioneers of the use of liposomes as a drug delivery system. Paul spent 6 years as a faculty member at Boston University, with research in the area of membrane fusion and protein-lipid interactions. Prior to joining Transave, Paul was employed for 8 years by The Liposome Company (owned by Elan Pharmaceuticals for 2 years) where he designed and tested liposomes for the delivery of polynucleotides specifically aimed at gene therapy. These efforts led to a number of patents and publications in leading scientific journals. Later, as part of Elan's Drug Delivery Division, Paul led projects to apply the liposome technology developed by his group in joint corporate ventures and between divisions of Elan Pharmaceuticals.

William Shatynski, Senior Director-Controller, CPA. Bill joined Transave in 2006 and has over 30 years of experience in all areas of financial and accounting systems with a particular emphasis in computer system re-engineering, budgeting and auditing. This period of time includes both International and Domestic companies in the pharmaceutical, biotech, transportation, manufacturing and service industries. Bill most recently came from CSAV Agency where he was the Controller and re-engineered their accounting and financial reporting systems overseeing four operating companies. Prior to CSAV agency he worked for Zambon Corporation, MacCregor (USA) Incorporated, ABB Power Generation, ADP, and the big four CPA firm, Ernst and Young. He completed his undergraduate degree at Rutgers, and obtained his MBA from Seton Hall University.

Donald J. Hayden, Jr. Mr. Hayden brings to Transave the experiences, insights, and perspective gained during a highly successful 25-year career in pharmaceuticals and related health care businesses with Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, including 15 years in senior executive positions. Mr. Hayden has a proven track record of innovative strategy development, growing successful products and businesses, and building exceptional leadership teams. During his career at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Mr. Hayden held key positions such as: president of Oncology and Immunology; senior vice president for Worldwide Franchise Management and Business Development; president of Intercontinental and senior vice president, Business Development, Pharmaceuticals; president of Worldwide Medicines; executive vice president of Strategy; and executive vice president of the Health Care Group. For the past four years, Mr. Hayden served as executive vice president and president, Americas, overseeing two major pharmaceutical units and two healthcare businesses with combined annual sales in excess of $10 billion, as well as global pharmaceutical manufacturing. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and has an M.B.A. from Indiana University.

Alex Barkas, Ph.D., Prospect Venture Partners. Dr. Barkas joined our board of directors in 2006. Dr. Barkas is a Managing Director of Prospect Venture Partners, a venture capital firm. Prior to co-founding Prospect Venture Partners I, II and III, he was a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers from 1991 to 1997, where he focused on healthcare product company investments. Prior to Kleiner Perkins, Dr. Barkas was a founder and CEO of BioBridge Associates, a health care industry consulting firm. Dr. Barkas is currently Chairman of the Board of Geron Corporation and Tercica, Inc., and serves on the board of directors of Amicus Therapeutics, Inc. and several private life science companies. Dr. Barkas received a Ph.D. in biology from New York University and a B.A. in Biology from Brandeis University, where he currently is Chairman of the University Science Advisory Council and serves on the Board of Trustees.

Richard S. Kollender, Quaker BioVentures. Mr. Kollender joined Quaker BioVentures as a Principal in early 2003 and was promoted to Partner in 2005. Previously, he worked at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), where he held positions in sales, marketing and worldwide business development. During his tenure in business development, he had the opportunity to evaluate both early and late stage compounds for in-licensing, including the successful licensing of Abreva, an anti-viral indicated for the treatment of cold sores. As a marketer, Mr. Kollender was a brand manager in the Oncology and Specialty Products business unit of GSK where he had both pre-launch and post-launch product management responsibilities. In addition, he was a founding member of GSK's eMarketing Group, a unit that sought to leverage the Internet as well as other emerging technologies in the pursuit of innovative and commercially viable new marketing channels.

Mr. Kollender also served as an investment manager at S.R. One. At S.R. One, he had the opportunity to evaluate potential investment opportunities, perform due diligence, structure and negotiate investments and to work with management teams to execute their strategies following investment. He also served as an active board observer for several of the portfolio companies.

Mr. Kollender began his career as a Certified Public Accountant with KPMG Peat Marwick in Philadelphia, and spent six years in public practice. His public accounting practice included a significant emphasis on the healthcare and emerging businesses sectors. He is a member of both the American and Pennsylvania Institutes of Certified Public Accountants.

Mr. Kollender holds a B.A. from Franklin and Marshall College and an M.B.A. and Health Administration & Policy degrees with Honors from the University of Chicago. Mr. Kollender is the Chairman of TargetRx. He also sits on the board of directors of Precision Therapeutics, NuPathe, Transave and Transport Pharmaceuticals, and is an active board observer for several other Quaker BioVentures portfolio companies.

Stephen H.C. Kraus, Bessemer Venture Partners. Steve is a member of Bessemer Venture Partner's life science investment team. Steve has been actively involved with Bessemer's investments in Sirtris Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: SIRT), Affymax (NASDAQ: AFFY), Oxagen, Aveo Pharmaceuticals, Acceleron, Tempo, LumeRx and Acorn Cardiovascular. He currently serves on the board of Restore Medical (NASDAQ: REST). Prior to joining Bessemer, Steve was a Director at the Ironwood Equity Fund, a growth-stage private equity firm, and a management consultant at Bain & Company. Steve graduated summa cum laude from Yale University and received his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Geert-Jan Mulder, M.D., Forbion Capital Partners (formerly ABN AMRO Capital Life Sciences.) Geert-Jan is a Medical Doctor by training and has two years of clinical experience in the Academic Hospital in Utrecht. He then joined Searle as Medical Adviser in the field of arthritis and pain (COX-2 technology) and worked on the local and European positioning of celecoxib. Before joining ABN AMRO Capital in 2001, he worked as Clinical Research Manager for Byk Gulden (Altana Pharma) in The Netherlands. His department dealt with Phase IIa, IIb, IIIa and IIIb clinical trials, focused on proof of concept designs and new indications in Gastroenterology, Respiratory (asthma and COPD) and Intensive Care Medicine. On the corporate level he was one of the members of the Global Medical Marketing group of the Respiratory Franchise. Besides taking an active role in the Forbion investment process, he assists portfolio companies in their clinical development programs and strategy.

Robert Weisskoff, Ph.D., Fidelity Biosciences. Robert is a Partner at Fidelity Biosciences. He has worked extensively in both academia and the bioscience industry. Prior to joining Fidelity in 2004, Robert held various senior roles in R&D and Business Development at both pharmaceutical and medical device companies. In his academic career, Robert was Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School, and on the faculty of the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences Technology (HST) Program, and performed research at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was Associate Director of the MGH-NMR Center. There he worked at the intersection of basic research, medical technology development, and clinical research in a variety of areas. Robert is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and an inventor on 3 US patents.
